"realistic" looking terrain by hand: start from a small series of randomly placed and colored dots (1)
...then copy/paste it around a few times (2)
... then shrink the end result to 50% of its size (3)
A group of terrains made with the above procedure only 2 or 3 of these are in the final version, because some of them look right down ugly :/
